I am a Virginia Tech student focused
|
I had the quote "live for yourself and you will live in vain; live for others and you will live again" written on a Post-It and stuck on the wall next to my desk in my home in New Jersey for two years before I was accepted into Virginia Tech, causing my whole family to pack up their things and move to Virginia. People usually get surprised when I tell them this. “They moved all that way for you?” Yes. Yes they did. And I am always grateful for their love and support. My family has been with me through some dark days. In return, my father said they wanted one thing: “Take the love you have for us and spread it around,” he had said while flipping through the pages of my favorite book, “Humans of New York”. I had rolled my eyes then, annoyed that he was lucky enough to open to a random page and read the best quote in that book. But a few hours later, I had slid the book off the coffee table in the family room and flipped to that page. I looked picture that Brandon Stanton took and pondered for a moment. Maybe my dad had a point. I couldn’t offer my parents money, a nice house, or a new car. But I could strive to be the best person I could possibly be. And so, inspired my those wonderful words that beautiful woman had uttered, I began my life of service.
